Claude subscription vs API: what a gift does not include

A Claude gift subscription upgrades the consumer Claude experience on an eligible account. It does not purchase API credits, settle a Console balance, or create credentials for a software integration.

Two products, two billing systems

Anthropic describes paid Claude plans and the Claude API Console as separate products. Pro and Max cover the consumer Claude interfaces and eligible plan features. The API is usage-based access for developers building applications and integrations.

Gift subscription: redeemed on a Claude account for the selected Pro or Max term.
API Console: funded and billed separately according to API usage.
An API key is a sensitive developer credential and is never the deliverable for a gift order.
A shared or pre-made account is also not a legitimate substitute for either product.

Why Claude Code can cause confusion

Eligible Pro and Max plans can include Claude Code using the same subscription account and shared plan limits. That does not turn the subscription into generic API balance. If Claude Code is configured to use an API key, that API usage may be billed separately through Console.

Choose the right route

Buy a gift subscription when the recipient wants Claude's individual paid experience and can redeem on an eligible account. Fund Console directly when the goal is programmatic API calls, production applications, or metered developer usage.
